Because it's only going to benefit the richest part of the country. The rest of us are suffering as it is and we're wasting silly amounts of money on the games.

you forget the amount of foreign currency comming in will explode during olympics. That will benefit the whole country.
Furthermore is there alot of jobs created around the olympics, from builders, adminitrators to common stewards. All these will benefit the country aswell.
Just because its situated in London doesnt mean that it wont rub off rest of the country, far from it. You might just not see it until 1-2 years after the olympics are done, but the benefit will definately be there

The tradition? It was started by Hitler for the 1936 games!
As for the economic benefit I'm extremely skeptical. Tourist numbers for the UK as a whole (and even for London) aren't expected to rise and I think it's pretty unlikely that the businesses receiving their custom will aid a trickle down through society in general. Add in the month of hassle around London and the cost diminishes further not to mention the new draconian policing.
I was led to believe the torch is lit in Greece and carried via relay to it's destination. Yet a quick google gives a result of 8,000 inspirational people will carry the Olympic Flame as it journeys across the UK., Does that mean there's 8,000 torches? And while we're on the subject of 'inspirational people' who invited that freak will.i.am along!

Well something started in 1936 and been at all events since IS a tradition no matter what you call it.
As for economics: During the olympics tourism will skyrocket. These people will have to eat, sleep etc. Where will they do this? restaurants and hotels in London, ergo give an injection to the economy. Furthermore is all the hotels and restaurants prices inflated during the olympics which will create more tax income since its based on the amount of money. This will greatly benefit England. Building the olympic stadiums and olympic city + city renovation for the olympics, has created mass employment in the building industry, if only for a couple of years but still massive amounds of jobs for construction. This has created a great tax revenue from both enployees earning a fee to companies getting orders. These people go out and spend the money they earned creating more income for England since there is sales tax on everything. There is also all the service personel working during the olympics to cater for the public + the stewards. All these jobs will created tax revenue aswell.
The traffic hassle is an annoyance but the loss of money wont be noticable compared to the revenue created by the olympics.
An area I havent touched is transportation. There will also be an increase on money earned from transportation during olympics since the people there will have to navigate around with tube and taxis.

This is the first link I could find but there have been numerous others. If it were that simple why have there been so few profitable olympics in modern times? London didn't need the games, tourists would have come anyway. As it is whole swathes of the city are going to be disturbed (including people being forced out of their homes/businesses shut down) - I really don't see the benefit for the average British person.
Just found out that Wandsworth one-way system is gonna have Olympic lanes which us cunts that paid for the fucking thing can't drive in. It's bad enough as it is without adding bits of road we can't drive on. It's gonna be fucking mayhem.
