I work away from home but live in digs and have been offered a trec mountain bike 4300 for a ton, second hand but don't know if it's worth the coin or get a new bike from halfords or somewhere. Opinions gratefully received.

??? hard one to call as i dont know shit about mountain bikes, other than the fact that i don't think there cool ;-)
but who the fuck am i to say what's cool and what's not?.. 100spot for bike ain't back at all mate.
it'll be used for getting to/from work/digs only.

I reckon he probably paid around 350-400 for it, could be a good buy, but give it a good going over and take it for a spin first.
2nd hand (originally)3-400 quid bike that's been looked after is always gonna be a shit loads better than some <£100 new "bike" that'll weigh more than Beth Ditto and will spoil any enjoyment you should get from cycling IMO
