Unless you planning on doing lots of miles each day, then stick with what your comfortable with, Yeah cycling shoes do give you optimum performance, but nothing better than bombing around in a pair of Og's
Dissagreeing with all the above - there's NOTHING better for cycling than a pair of clipless pedals and shoes unless you're some loony downhiller !! IMO they are much safer off-road as you have more control - you can pull as well as push on the pedals - the shoes are stiffer - your feet don't bounce off the pedal - you can hop like a bastard...
I'd argue that the stiffness of the sole is the main factor. I like clips - but that's 'cause I'm a luddite. I'd also say if he's cycling some distance, clipless wouldn't provide the comfort of clips. Clipless provide speed and efficiency. Sometimes that isn't the main objective...

Stiffness is a major factor (as we all know ) as all your energy is transferred to the pedal rather than flexing the sole - For a steady pootle fair enough, get some miles in or worse, hills, and it aint pleasant wearing trainees... That's MO anyhow, I love bikes and the only time I even thought about clips (since the 80's) was a brief foray into the "trendy hipster fixed" scene that was bollox BTW...
