Quite simply the best English midfielder of his generation. Could see passes beyond the comprehension of most, fantastic technique for a British player. In my opinion, second only to Roy Keane as the most influential midfielder in the history of the Premiership. The least bling professional football you could think of.

Would put Steven Gerard in front of Scholesy.
Well, I tell them there's no problem Only solutions

There is an argumant for that I suppose but it seems only 'British' people agree with you. The rest of the world including the best midfielders around today all say Scholes.
Bad move imo, smacks of desperation. He knew himself when he retired he were half a yard too slow, as did Neville, lets hope he doesn't embarrass himself.

If you read what I say, I said...'...in the history of the Premiership'. Gerrard, for all his qualities, has never been central to a Premiership winning side. Scholes was instrumental in United's domination of the league. You're talking about a different level. Funnily enough, over here, where most hacks are Liverpool fans, they wouldn't have it that Gerrard has even been Liverpool's best player over the past ten years and that he's overrated - he flirted too much with Chelsea for their liking. I personally don't buy that and reckon a lot of the flack thrown Gerrard's way from opposition fans is undeserved. Just because I rate Scholes so highly doesn't mean that Gerrard isn't a great player.
Scholes did flatter to deceive when playing for England and I know Andy will say he was messed around to accommodate Lampard and Gerrard but, the odd performance apart, he never seemed to bring his A game to England even before Gerrard and Lampard established themselves at International Level. Maybe that says more about England than Scholes though.

I wouldn't say that G but United haven't signed a midfielder since 2007 and it was obvious to everyone that we needed one last year let alone this year. Fergie isn't being allowed to sign who he wants IMO.

For me Gerrard was a better all round player than Scholes at his peak. No doubting Scholes was a very important player in a sometimes great United team of the last 15/16 years, and of course was instrumental in helping United secure many Premiership titles. This is just my personal opinion and have never witnessed an English player influence and change games with his talent better or on a more regular basis than Steven Gerrard in the last twenty years.
Thought United were poor in second half today, maybe coincidence but introduction of Scholes who had a mistake filled 40 minutes , gave the ball away on numerous occasions and his mistake led to Citys second.

just seems like pure desperation to me on fergies part after his comments of dont panic,it seems thats exactly what he is doing bringing scholes back.great player in his day,no doubt but end of the day would he really have retired if he didnt think he was past his best

agreed but saying that i would love him to come to newcastle
He said in the summer he didn't want to play for Oldham (his boyhood team) if he thought he was past it and would just retire. So now he's back at the highest level when he's past it? Still best English midfielder ever, criminal he retired from international scene so early
