They want the oil and all the wealth that goes with and so do we. They won't start another war as they know they can not win.
They are however gaining support from all the other south american countries to isolate us in trade which will have an effect on our ecomany but not as much as giving away all that oil.
Thank God we persuaded the French not to sell them anymore Exocet missiles. Phew!
It's a different story nowadays though and the small squadron of Typhoons on the islands coupled with HMS Dauntless patrolling the South Atlantic (and obviously a sub in the dark depths) means they couldn't get within a 100 miles of the Falklands.
I lost a cousin down there when I was 11 he was one of the Welsh Guards that never came back. Years later in 1994 when I was in the Royal Navy Submarine Service we did a patrol down there, fuck me what a place penguins and sheep but eerie I personally could smell the death down there, mind you if they want another waltz this time perhaps they could put boys a bit older than 15 in the trenches this time, personally if I was Cameron I'd tell them, "invade if your going to invade stop fucking mouthing and do it and then will fucking hit you with the world's finest, stick to what your good at, corned beef, now fucking wrap up". Shit I forgot our PMs got no bollocks
It's all politically led vote buyer from Fernandez. Anniversary of the war is coming up, emotions running high, great moment to make some half-arsed point and ensure you get in for another term.

Yep, in the next 6 months or so things are going to get rocky in Argentine. Their real rate of inflation is supposedly double the official rate and their cost cutting exercises will hit peripheral areas like Patagonia where support for the military is stronger than the capital. I think going to the UN demonstrates just how pointless an organisation it's becoming. As a forum for open debate on issues such as this its value is limited IMO. Doesn't help that nations like Brazil, Venezuela etc are backing up Argentina's nonsense/baseless claim. Like the above I don't think that war is likely but I do think the British government need to maintain a tough line to Kirchener.
As someone with very close family ties to Argentina, I find it very depressing whenever the topic of the Falklands come up. In common with the vast majority of British people I believe the sovereignty of the islands should be on the basis of the self-determination of its inhabitants. However, those that believe the Argentines' claim on the islands is simply down to the potential for oil, or short-term political advantage, fundamentally fail to understand the depth of feeling in Argentina that has always been there. The Foreign Office fell into the same trap in 1982 prior to the invasion, with the consequences that followed.
Argentina is a very different place today to that which it was in 1982. I would be astonished if they launched another military attack. However, they will continue to use any other tactic to get that which they believe is rightfully theirs.
Had Argentina not invaded in 1982 I believe the islands would either now be Argentine, or at the very least some form of shared sovereignty. Most British people had never heard of the place, the islanders themselves were not full British citizens, and the Foreign Office couldn't have cared less. As a consequence of the invasion no British politician can sensibly contemplate any form of compromise as long as folk are alive who remember the 1982 conflict. This one will run and run for a very long time.
The Argies indoctrinate their children at school that the Falklands and the islands' inhabitants are Argentinian. Until they let their people know the truth there will always be a chance of war.
If they do invade it would be the most foolish military move anyone has ever made. All this crap about the UK sending nuclear weapons down to the south Atlantic is crap, there is always a UK boat (sub) and warship down there on patrol, it comes from the lessons we learnt last time. The last conflict went from April to Jume, this one wouldn't last a month.

The four Typhoons stationed on the Falklands and HMS Dauntless patrolling the South Atlantic would take out the entire Argie air force and navy in no time at all. They couldn't invade if they really wanted too.
