Bought an off peak return to manchester, to go friday....With an off peak return as you know you can return within a month of the day of outward travel.......anyway neither there or on the way back was the ticket checked or stamped !! Therefore theres no proof i've used it, im thinking about going back up to manchester, The return part of the return is definatly still valid, but is the outward ticket ? any idea ?
The outward ticket will have a start date, think that's always the date of travel but it may be worth trying - if it doesnt work just buy another on board
Yes. Try not to get your return stamped and you should be able to claim a refund on both tickets. If you intend to use the outward again and it's within one month it won't be a problem. My ex issues rail tickets for her collage pupils and I do it all the time. If I'm ever questioned why I didn't use the outward ticket on day of purchase I say it's because my plans changed you nosey bastard. ;-)

Yeah, gonna try and find out in advance, only that as the return is definaly valid i'd be able to get back up and back down for £9 as i have 1. a railcard and 2. cross country do 10% NUS discount !

Yeah, i'd of got a refund if it would of been £50+ quid as i did consider it, but they charge you £10 usually for a refund and its only a £20 ticket !!
An open ended return will allow you one week and one month from day of purchase, for the outbound and homebound journies, respectively. I commuted to Manchester from Stoke station 5 days a week over the Christmas period, and often got away with buying a return on the Monday, and travelling with it all week. Sometimes longer. It also helps that if your ticket is stamped, it's easily wiped off. You're only really buggered if they use a biro.
This was common amongst passengers on the route, and obvious, no less to the train companies themselves, and come the new year, they stopped open ended returns altogether on the particular route, meaning you could only buy a ticket to return on the day of purchase. This, coupled with general price hikes led to a huge increase in travelling costs for myself - From potentially around £11 (or less) to £65.
After a conversation with a particularly decent stationmaster, however, I found out you could get an open ended return to Stalybridge for about £15, which, of course, you would need to go to Manchester Piccadilly for the first leg of the journey. It also means that if ticket man comes round and marks the ticket with a biro, you can say it was marked on the previous leg of the journey.
'For Off-Peak Return tickets, outward journeys must be made on the date shown on the ticket and up to 04:29 the following morning; return journeys must be made within one calendar month and up to 04:29 the morning following the last day of validity'
Theres my awnser i suppose, ah well, will buy a one way single up to manchester if i do go, should only be 9 quid which is 2 times what it costs to get to birmingham, and thats only 9 miles down the road......Cheers for the help lads
I used to do it all the time. virgin refunded but take £5 off for admin. then they wrote to me saying don't take the piss but I had a good run on unstamped tickets
