Wow open book there, totally depends on where you want to start. I have got into the game myself this year and have started on the Scottish stuff to start, and going from the non peated up. My first was a Glenmorangie 12, which was a good start as it turned out compared to lots of other single malts around for supermarket money. You can then always go to other parts of the world, and for me Japanese whisky is bring whole new delights to the taste buds. it's a slipperly slope though, and buying a 70cl bottle to find out you don't like it can prove expensive. masters of Malt and other such companies offer tating bottles which will help when you are looking to spend £100 plus on a full size bottle.
Some good threads all over the web about whisky though. Maybe decide on an area to explore or if you are into your styles perhaps use bottle themes to go along with, just a suggestion otherwise you can get not only overwhelmed but carried away too!
So maybe a Glenmorangie, highland Park 12, something fromJura for some peat. All these are off the shelf bottles and Waitrose if you have one near is a good place to find a wide selection normally.
Malt wise a good all rounder is The Glenlivet it's a speyside, £23 in Morrisons and £24 in Asda at the moment. One of my favourites is Aberlour another speyside malt, it's a bit sweet and it's £20 in morrisons ATM which is a steal.
Moving into the stronger flavours Talisker is really good and quite strong abv wise as well so you get a bit of a burn with it. Laphroiag is cracking as well, it has quite a distinctive flavour and is not for everyone.

I got a bottle of the arbelour for 20 I think it was in sainsburies not opened it yet As I had a month off the booze November.
But reviews don't sound so good like it used to be good but recently it's gone right down in quality ?
I will find out on Friday....
Laphroaig ? Is that a very peaty one. A friend bought me a double in a bar and the smell was enough to put me off. The taste was not for me either if it's the same one ?
My favourite subject. Laphroaig quarter cask is belting but not for the faint hearted very smokey and peaty but glorious. Good starters are Aberlour and Jura. Personally love Glenrothes or Springbank stunning. It is totally unreal the differences in taste. Personally take mine without water or ice
I'd recommend anyone to try out Edradour.its the smallest legal distillery in the Uk.they have some cracking whiskies.well worth a visit as well if you are in the area.its located in a stunning setting about a mile up the hill from pitlochry.
Howay ... Only 4 posts in some cunts shit himself, the other is in Provi for his peeve, and the third started grafting in a distillery just get his drink[spook]
Out last night for an Indian then a couple of Laphroaig Realy didn't like this first time I tried it but last night added a bit of water and it was like a different drink.
Matured in olorroso sherry casks this is like a whisky and Christmas pudding combination - anyone in glasgow that's interested they sell it in the good spirit company on bath st and they let you have a wee try before you buy
Recently I've been drinking Aberlour again, this is lovely one of my favourites , Ancnoc 12 this was a present and very nice as well it's another speyside malt and similar to aberlour but with a smooth smoky finish and tonight is glenfiddich 15 another cracker made with sherry & burbon casks so lots of flavour.
