Lads, I'm looking to buy a bike for the commute. We have a Cycle2work scheme set up which allows us to purchase a bike with a value of upto £1000 for considerably less, question is, which bike would you recommend as I know there's a few keen cyclists on here...
I had a Boardman Pro a few years back which was spot on so could opt for the latest model or is there any other options worth a look?
Full Sus doesn't appeal and would be wasted to be fair and a road bike/racer is out of the question as most of the journey is off road.
Used to be an Independent Fabrication MTB owner so once considered myself a brand snob...soon changed after I bought a "2nd bike", a Boardman last year on the scheme and it's fucking ace. What sort of riding you gonna be doing ? Genesis worth a look too IMO
I got a trek hybrid through cycle scheme. cost about 300 quid and it's the best money I ever spent. good sturdy bikes, comfy to ride, quite quick. for commuting and recreation it's brilliant
The Pro was mint like, wish I'd kept it now. Still contemplating just buying the new version to be fair. From mine to work is mainly loose gravel footpaths etc... and if I use it on a weekend it'll hopefully be a bit singletrack/XC.
One of the lads said he was thinking of getting a hybrid nefc, any good?
I'd say so unless you're going off road or racing. it's really light, the lock is as heavy as the bike.
Thing is though G, if the bikes woth £1000 RRP, I'll only pay just over £500 for it and then it's over a year so it'll be woerth spending the extra ££ to be fair.

Would defo' get another, a mate's got the FS that's a blinder for the cash... I'd consider a hybrid but put some cyclocross tyres on it for the gravel tracks etc (got mine through the Winter in all the snow on 32mm CX tyres on days when colleagues could barely get to work in their cars ! ) TBH, if you're a weekend ST warrior, stick with the pro HT again as the tyres are too narrow for gnarly stuff anyhow and ride quite well on the road...
Yeah, and watch out for the final payment now - used to be 5% of the value but heard the robbing bastards (I mean government) were set to change it making it farely pricey :-(
there's a way round final payment. you make a final rental payment which means technically your work owns it for a year or so but in reality it's yours
Surly Long Haul Trucker, all day. Literally one of the most well rounded bicycles on the market. It's perfect for on and off road, and unbeatably versatile; you'll see them fully loaded hauling a person and a million possessions across the world, on road, off road, I've even seen people convert them to fixed.

The cyclists choice by a mile.

When you say good off road, I would not like to do any downhilling on this!
